Keep doors closed so that the air conditioner is not continuously working to cool or warm the
house/room

Keep any filter dust and lint free. If it is washable, clean regularly.

Don't turn the thermostat down too low on a hot day

Don't turn the heating temperature up too high on a cold day

Don't keep adjusting the thermostat. Constant adjustments can cause problems.

Make sure there is plenty of air flow around the unit and it can't overheat.

Keep the batteries well charged in any remote control

Turn the air conditioner off if leaving the house for any prolonged length of time.

Cover all windows well to avoid heat loss in winter or outside heat entering during a hot summer day

Have the Carrier air conditioning unit serviced annually or as specified in the manual for your model.
